Physician weight management for Chicago
We offer a full spectrum of tools to help you to manage your weight. Let us help you on your journey to better health.
Very low-calorie diet
A very low-calorie diet (VLCD) can help you to lose weight as you start a long-term program for weight maintenance. We can help you to use VLCD as part of a comprehensive long-term strategy.
Medications
The Food & Drug Administration has deemed several medications to be safe and effective to help you to maintain your weight, and to manage the illnesses that come from being overweight (such as diabetes). We use these medications to help you.
Orbera intragastric balloon
The intragastric balloon is part of a 12-month program that addresses portion size, hunger, and satiety (fullness). The balloon is placed into the stomach endoscopically (through the mouth) – without surgery. The balloon takes up space in the stomach. An intensive follow-up program for 12 months has been shown to help patients patients lose (on average) 25-50 pounds. In the U.S. weight loss trial that led to FDA approval, Orbera patients lost 3.1 times more weight than patients in the diet/lifestyle part of the trial. After 6 months, the Orbera is taken out (again endoscopically – without surgery). We will then follow you closely for another 6 months to make sure that you can maintain the eating behaviors learned while the balloon was in place. The Orbera has been used around the world for well over a decade in over 200,000 patients, and we feel that it is a safe procedure to offer our patients.
Endoscopic revision of gastric bypass
If you have regained weight after your gastric bypass, it may be due to dilation of your pouch or a fistula. Dr. Kumar has performed over 100 endoscopic (nonsurgical) gastric bypass revisions, and published his research. He trained at Harvard Medical School with Dr. Christopher Thompson, who developed and patented the technique.
